Online Learning During Summer Break Paid Off. Min Tzu Elementary School Tops Other Schools on “Cool English: US Travel Expert Contest” with 131 Students Achieving Full Mark

        K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education and Discover America Committee in Taiwan collaborated and held “Cool English: US Travel Expert Contest” during the summer break. During the pandemic, middle school and elementary school students were able to learn English for tourism with the resources provided by Cool English website. There were 131 students of Chiayi Min Tzu Elementary School achieved the full mark and won the US Travel Expert Award. The number of students winning the award tops other schools in Taiwan.

        In order to enhance the English of students and to make them learn more about travelling in the US, K-12 Education Administration, Ministry of Education and Discover America Committee in Taiwan collaborated to release the digital lessons and to hold “Cool English: US Travel Expert Contest”. The audio e-books with pictures and online practices enable students to test themselves after the lessons. This motivates students to utilize the resources on the platform to learn English vocabulary about travelling in the US, so as to improve listening and reading and to know more natural sceneries and cultures of the US.

        Lan-fen Chen, the instructor of Min Tzu Elementary School for the contest, teaches English for 6 classes, and all of her students participated in the contest. “I encourage students to learn online due to the pandemic,” said Chen. She decided to use the Cool English website as her teaching material, and taught her students how to make use of it in the computer classroom. She also asked Bo-wei Yao, the teacher of information studies, to instruct students to sign up an account of EduCloud. The feature of the contest is to motivate students to learn online. Students even took notes on the mistakes they made during the summer break in order to gain high scores. They also made use of the website to look up the words they didn’t know and to practice their listening and reading. Some of the students who weren’t that good at English achieved the full mark as well. Aside from the contest, students also like the other resources for English learning on the website, such as “Learning English with Songs”. Many had fun learning their favorite English songs in front of the screen.

        “Our school offers computers and tablets for students, and encourages the students to teach themselves English with the free resources provided by the Ministry of Education,” indicates Xian-liang Cha, the Principal. The assignments for students during the summer break has also changed to online English learning from practicing on paper. The approach will be conducted again since the it clearly paid off this year.
