Chiayi City held its 2025 Autumn National Memorial Ceremony this morning (September 3) at the Chiayi Martyrs’ Shrine. Mayor Huang Min-Hui presided over the solemn rites, joined by military representatives, elected officials, and city department heads, to honor the soldiers and police officers who gave their lives in service to the nation. Mayor Huang also presented condolence payments to bereaved families as a gesture of comfort and respect.
Mayor Huang noted that the ceremony coincided with Armed Forces Day, underscoring the city’s commitment to remembering those who made the ultimate sacrifice. This year, the ritual paid tribute to 20 fallen soldiers and 4 police officers who died in the line of duty. Seeing families in attendance, she said, was both moving and humbling, a reminder of their sacrifice and resilience. With guests from government, schools, and civic groups gathered together, the event reflected a shared determination to safeguard the nation. Mayor Huang emphasized the inscription at the Martyrs’ Shrine—“This land, these people, heroes for eternity”—as a symbol of collective gratitude. She expressed hope that the autumn ceremony would both console bereaved families and remind future generations to cherish the peace that had been hard-won.
The shrine currently enshrines 20 honored soldiers, 74 servicemen who perished in the Caolingtan tragedy, and four police officers who died in the line of duty: Hou Ren-ze, Tsai Jui-hsiung, Wang Chia-chih, and Li Cheng-han. Their selfless devotion, Mayor Huang said, embodies loyalty and valor, ensuring their deeds will never be forgotten. Families of the fallen, too, have shown strength and perseverance, contributing across society and carrying forward their legacy.
According to the Department of Civil Affairs, the annual September memorial not only commemorates the courage of the fallen but also aims to comfort bereaved families while reinforcing respect for those who serve. In recent years, the sacrifice of military and police personnel has drawn greater public attention to duty-related risks and renewed appreciation for their quiet heroism in safeguarding communities. The Chiayi City Government expressed its deepest respect to all who made the ultimate sacrifice, pledging that their spirit will endure.
The ceremony followed traditional rites, beginning with the national anthem and a moment of silent tribute. Ritual offerings of incense, flowers, and fruit were made before Mayor Huang led participants in three bows of respect at the shrine’s memorial tablets. She then personally presented condolence payments to the families of the honored, as the hall filled with solemn reverence and enduring remembrance.
